Blaydon is a small town in Gateshead, situated near Newcastle upon Tyne, in North East England. “Blaydon Races” is also one of the the Regimental Songs of The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, the modern descendants of The Royal Northumberland Fusiliers. Thanks to Ronald for suggesting this tune!

Originally, the Blaydon Races was a large-scale painting on canvas located in the precinct of Blaydon shopping centre. The celebratory work depicts the characters from the popular song "The Blaydon Races" by Geordie Ridley and was 12 metres long and metres high.
The first Blaydon horse races were held in on a circular island in the Tyne called Blaydon Island (Dent’s Meadow). Due to the event’s huge success, the organisers decided to hold the event again the following year on the 9th of June. The well-known Geordie folk song, The Blaydon Races, was written by Gateshead born Geordie Ridley.
Dave wrote the book, ‘Gannin to Blaydon Races The Life and Times of George Ridley’ which contains the original lyrics. The lyrics that are prompting debate feature in the song’s chorus. Most people presume the lyrics are ‘Gannin alang’ the Scotswood Road’ whereas the original Ridley version states ‘Ganalang’.
